The mayor of Catanzaro, Nicola Fiorita, has signed a contingent and urgent ordinance aimed at regulating the use of drinking water during the summer period, in order to combat waste and ensure the resource is used primarily for the essential needs of the population.
The ordinance, which will be valid from the day of publication (June 20, 2025) until September 1, 2025, is necessary in light of the current climatic conditions characterized by high temperatures and rainfall levels below the seasonal average, together with the reduction of water supply in the municipal area.
Specifically, the ordinance establishes that the use of water drawn from the municipal water network is permitted only for food, domestic, and sanitary purposes, or for authorized activities such as the maintenance of public green areas, urban hygiene, and urban gardens.
The following are prohibited:
irrigation and watering of gardens, lawns, and vegetable patches larger than 20 sqm outside the time slot 10:00 p.m. – 6:00 a.m.;
washing of courtyards and yards between 6:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m.;
washing of private vehicles (except for authorized facilities);
filling of public or private swimming pools without prior municipal authorization.
Specific provisions are also set for municipal sports areas under concession, for which watering is prohibited between 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., except for sports fields with grass surfaces.
The Administration invites all citizens to actively cooperate by adopting virtuous behaviors and respecting the rules regarding the elimination of waste and the responsible use of water resources.
Administrative fines ranging from 25 to 500 euros are provided for violators.
