Good morning, I have read again about the new hospital. We are forcibly adding to the "quaestio" some necessary considerations given my initial reluctance to participate. I used the plural, as I am obviously not the only bearer: few but well-defined criteria at the basis of the design choice. In short:
- locating a nursery in a neighborhood is one thing, identifying the site of a public facility such as the regional hub hospital is quite another. Allow me to remind you that, unlike the nursery, the hub hospital is not created for the neighborhood, much less for the city alone; it is created for a territory of provincial/regional interest. In other words, the site must be strategic with respect to the regional communication routes, which are from the west, upper and lower Tyrrhenian, from the east, upper and lower Ionian, as well as from the inland areas. Last but not least, proximity to the airport!
- easy and immediate accessibility not only in ordinary management, but also and above all in emergencies following unfortunate disasters of any kind.
- guarantee and prevention of an absurd hypothetical orographic isolation of the facility following disasters;
- guarantee and safety not only in accessing but also in leaving the facility to serve the territory (which is not just Pontepiccolo!)
- guarantees for safe and continuous certainties, including climatology in air connections (helicopters), which can only be offered by a site in the plains;
- close synergy with training and research centers (university, CNR and polyclinic) which is sure to succeed only if they are physically close;
- prevention of the loss of regional users, who are better attracted and drawn to facilities that are more happily and easily reachable such as Lamezia, Soverato and Cosenza itself;
- Cosenza teaches: the new Cosenza hub hospital will not be next to the Annunziata, but next to UNICAL, a CNR training and research center, in an excellent position with a planned upcoming A2 exit;
- moreover, the site in Catanzaro West would be an incentive for the activation of new interregional services such as a Major Burns Center or Hyperbaric Chamber.
This is what correct healthcare governance and wisdom suggest. Thank you for reading and your attention, Vincenzo Italia.
