On June 6, 2025, at the Punto e a Capo Bookstore in Catanzaro, the essay by Claudio
Caroleo titled Alejandro González Iñárritu and the Rise of Mexican Cinema, published by La Rondine, was presented.
The event was moderated by film expert and radio speaker Mattia Canino.
The book is a long journey that traces the origins of cinema in Mexico, up to the present day,
through its various artistic phases, providing an analysis of the historical and socio-cultural context of Mexico.
In addition, there is a complete overview of the most important directors, actors, and films that have marked the
history of Mexican cinema.
But the real focus of the essay is the analysis of the famous "Death Trilogy" by the director, composed of the films
Amores perros (2000); 21 Grams (2003) and Babel (2006). In particular, the aforementioned
Amores perros, the first chapter of the trilogy, is analyzed, in which the author stages a cruel and hyper-realistic fresco of
Mexico City and its devastated characters. In addition to a philosophical and sociological analysis of the
aforementioned works, there is also an analysis from a technical and directorial point of view.
Claudio Caroleo's book is only the second work (in Italy) that has analyzed the well-known
Mexican director.
