Good morning, I have read again about the new hospital. We are forced to add to the "quaestio" some due considerations given my initial reluctance to participate. I used the plural, as I am obviously not the only bearer: few but well-defined criteria at the basis of the design choice. In short:
- locating a nursery in a neighborhood is one thing, identifying the site of a public facility such as the regional hub hospital is quite another. I would like to remind you that, unlike the nursery, the hub hospital is not created for the neighborhood, much less for the city alone, it is created for an area of provincial/regional interest. In other words, the site must be strategic with respect to the regional communication routes which are from the west, upper and lower Tyrrhenian, from the east, upper and lower Ionian, as well as from the inland areas. Last but not least, proximity to the airport!
- easy and immediate accessibility not only in ordinary management, but also and above all in emergencies following unfortunate disasters of any kind.
- guarantee and prevention of an absurd hypothetical orographic isolation of the facility following disasters;
- guarantee and safety not only in accessing but also in leaving the facility to serve the area (which is not just Pontepiccolo!)
- guarantees for safe and continuous certainties even in terms of climate for air connections (helicopters) that only a site in the plain can offer;
- close synergy with training and research centers (university, CNR and polyclinic) which can only be successful if physically close;
- prevention of the loss of regional users, who would be better attracted and focused towards facilities that are more happily and easily accessible such as Lamezia, Soverato and Cosenza itself;
- Cosenza teaches: the new Cosenza hub hospital will not be next to the Annunziata, but next to UNICAL, the CNR training and research center, in an excellent position with a planned A2 exit nearby;
- moreover, the site in Catanzaro Ovest would be an incentive for the activation of new interregional services such as a Major Burns Center, or Hyperbaric Chamber.
This is what correct health governance and wisdom suggest. Thank you for reading and your attention, Vincenzo Italia.
