Perched on the hills of Germaneto, allergic to any constructive criticism, unwilling to engage in any dialogue with the city, the rector of UMG Professor Cuda and his faithful Professor Mastroroberto are enjoying yet another “success” of our University, once again at the bottom of the Censis rankings of Italian universities and last among those in Calabria.
If the rules of politics applied to universities as well, there would be no other path for Rector Cuda but resignation. Unfortunately, the convenient shield of university autonomy will allow him to continue and to carry on with his “commendable” action.
I don’t want to shoot at the Red Cross or go hard on the Cuda-Mastroroberto duo, but it is worth remembering that for the second consecutive year Censis has crowned Unical as the top Italian university among the “large” ones, surpassing historic universities like Pavia, Perugia, Parma. But in Arcavacata they have a Lion as rector.
Unfortunately, neither Rector Cuda nor his predecessor De Sarro understood that by giving the green light to the faculty of medicine at Unical (then replicated also in Crotone and soon in Reggio Calabria) they dug the grave for our university, stripping it of the exclusivity of the medical school and thus its only real element of attractiveness.
But UMG is also failing the city of Catanzaro, with which it has never wanted to integrate. Where have the programs for introducing faculties and specialization courses in the historic center gone?
What do Mayor Fiorita and the councilor for university policies Monteverdi—who, by pure chance, is a lecturer at this same university—say about the UMG crisis? Silence, of course, because everyone is fine with things as they are, a university perched on the hills of Germaneto that in a few years could become a “high school.”
