The 22nd edition in Soverato from July 26 to August 2
After the announcement of Ambassador Denise Capezza and the Golden Column for Lifetime Achievement to the multi-award-winning Neapolitan actor Toni Servillo, the lineup of guests at the Magna Graecia Film Festival, conceived by brothers Alessandro and Gianvito Casadonte and dedicated to debut works and emerging authors, is further enriched.
For the first time, actress and director Margherita Buy will come to Soverato, where she will receive the Golden Column created by Brand GB Spadafora and will be the protagonist of a conversation on stage at the arena, moderated by journalist and documentarian Fabrizio Corallo.
Margherita Buy made her film debut in 1986 with La seconda notte by Nino Bizzarri. After collaborations with Daniele Luchetti (Domani accadrà and La settimana della Sfinge), Sergio Rubini (La stazione), and Giuseppe Piccioni, who directed her in Chiedi la luna, she was noticed by Carlo Verdone, who cast her as co-star in Maledetto il giorno che t’ho incontrato. The comedy turned out to be a box office hit, giving her popularity with the general public and leading her to work with great Italian directors such as Mario Monicelli, Ferzan Özpetek, Paolo Virzi, Giovanni Veronesi, Marco Bellocchio, Roberto Faenza, Nanni Moretti, Gabriele Salvatores, Ivano De Matteo, Silvio Soldini, Cristina and Francesca Comencini.
Winner of numerous David di Donatello, Nastri d’argento, Globi d’Oro, and Ciak d’Oro awards, Margherita Buy is to date the most awarded actress ever in Italy. In 2024, she made her directorial debut with the film Volare, for which she is also the screenwriter.
The MGFF, founded and directed by Gianvito Casadonte, now in its twenty-second edition, will offer a rich program of events and film screenings as part of the competitions dedicated to the sections of Italian debut works and documentaries, curated by Antonio Capellupo, and international debut works, curated by Silvia Bizio, who is also responsible for conversations with international talents. The novelty this year is the addition of a further section—directed by Jacopo Curcio and Luca Capacchione—which will present a selection of the best short film debuts, further enriching the proposal and cultural mission of the Festival, which has always been attentive to the promotion and enhancement of young talents.
The MGFF is supported by the Ministry of Culture, Calabria Straordinaria – the brand of the Calabria Region – Department of Tourism – Calabria Film Commission and the Municipality of Soverato. The Golden Columns awarded during the festival are made by Brand GB Spadafora.
